Tulsa Shootout Recap
On New Years
weekend, Tyler Thomas Motorsports attended
the first all open-wheel edition of the
Tulsa Shootout held at Tulsa’s Quik Trip
Center with over 700 competitors in 8
divisions looking to come home with the
Golden Driller. Practice on Thursday went
well, getting to make two hot-lap sessions
in the A-Class, Stock Non-wing, and Eco-Tec
Midget classes, then Thursday night was the
start of heat races and qualifiers which
included the A-Class and Non-wing Outlaw
classes.
Our draw put us
starting on the front row outside of the
A-Class heat but with some bad luck we did
not make it past the first lap of the heat
race so we were done for the weekend in
A-Class. Friday proved to be different
though as Tyler started third row inside of
the stock Non-wing heat race and made it up
to the third position. In the Non-wing
qualifier race, Tyler started in the fifth
row inside and drove up to a fourth place
finish which locked us into the Non-wing
A-feature on Saturday night. In the midget
heat, we started third row inside and
finished fifth which put us starting seventh
in the qualifier race. Starting seventh in
the Eco-Tec qualifier, Tyler made his way up
to the second position by halfway and ran
down the leader from a straightaway but
finished a close second, which locked us
into the midget main event on Saturday
night.
Tyler started
seventh row inside of the 25 lap Non-wing
A-Feature and by around halfway Tyler made
his way to the top-five. In the closing part
of the main event was arguably the most
exciting race of the night with some great
racing for second place and the leader
pulling out to a half straightaway lead and
Tyler coming out in second. In the Midget
main event, Tyler started seventh and made
his way up to the top five about five laps
in but with some bad luck and hard racing
taking place, we only managed an eleventh
place finish.
The next race for
us will be the Spring Fling held at Port
City Raceway in March for the first race of
the 2011 season.
